Step-by-step CapCut auto captions on phone, desktop and web, how to fix wrong words, and what to do when captions are a Pro feature for you.

To add auto captions in CapCut, open your project, tap or click Captions, choose Auto captions, select the spoken language and press Generate; then tap any caption block to fix words and pick a style. The feature exists on mobile, desktop and the web editor, but CapCut's own pages disagree on whether it is free or a Pro feature, so check the prompt on your account before you rely on it.
On mobile (iPhone and Android)
- Open a project and import your video.
- Tap Captions in the bottom toolbar (in some versions it's under Text).
- Tap Auto captions, confirm the language, and tap Generate.
- Tap a caption block, then Edit captions, to fix words.
- Choose a template or style and apply it to all captions.
- Export.
Keep the app open while it generates; CapCut uses cloud processing and switching apps can cancel the job.
On desktop (Windows and Mac)
- Import your video and drag it to the timeline.
- Click Captions in the top toolbar, then Auto captions.
- Choose the spoken language (and bilingual captions if you want a translation).
- Click Generate.
- Double-click a caption block (or right-click → Edit Captions) to correct words. Press Ctrl+B / Cmd+B to split a caption at the playhead.
On the web editor
- Open your project at capcut.com.
- Click Captions in the left panel, then Auto captions.
- Choose the language and click Generate.
- Select a caption block and click Edit captions in the right panel.
CapCut recommends Chrome or Edge for the web editor.
Is CapCut auto captions free?
It depends on your account. CapCut's pricing page lists Pro at USD 19.99/month (prices vary by region) and some CapCut pages list the caption generator among Pro tools, while others call auto captions free. Some users report a small free allowance. The honest answer is: try it on your account and look for a Pro badge or usage counter on the Generate step.
If you just want captions, not an editor
CapCut is a full editor, which is great if you edit there anyway. If you've already finished the video and only need word-by-word captions, a dedicated caption tool is faster: upload, pick a style, download. Capsubs does this with 1 free video every 2 weeks and no watermark, then $5/month for 10 videos. See Capsubs vs CapCut for an honest comparison.
Common problems
- Nothing generates: no clear speech, the wrong language selected, a weak connection, or muted audio. See CapCut auto captions not working.
- Stuck at 99%: wait a few minutes, then restart; CapCut often saves the result.
- Lots of wrong words: mute background music before generating, then regenerate.
FAQ
Can CapCut export an SRT file? On desktop and web, yes, for captions created with Auto captions (choose caption export, SRT or TXT). Manually typed text can't be exported as SRT.
Why are my CapCut captions in the wrong language? The language setting must match the speech. Change it and regenerate.
Does CapCut add a watermark? Not on standard exports, but using Pro-only templates or effects on a free account can add one or block export.
