CapCut auto captions usually fail because the speech isn't clear enough to detect, the wrong language is selected, the internet connection drops during cloud processing, the audio track is muted, or the feature needs Pro on your account. Check the language and audio first, keep the app open with a stable connection while it generates, and update CapCut.

1. No speech detected

Auto captions need clear speech. Music-only sections, very quiet voices or loud background music often produce nothing. Turn up the voice, mute the music track, then regenerate.

2. Wrong language selected

CapCut transcribes in the language you choose. If it doesn't match the speech, you get no captions or nonsense. Pick the right language under Auto captions and generate again.

3. Weak or dropped connection

CapCut uses cloud speech recognition, even on mobile. A slow or unstable connection can stop the job. Switch to stable Wi-Fi and try again.

4. Muted or missing audio

If the clip's audio is muted, detached or at zero volume, there's nothing to caption. Unmute the clip and check the audio waveform is visible.

5. Stuck at 99%

CapCut's help pages say to wait a few minutes (3–10 on desktop, 2–5 on mobile), because processing may continue in the background. If it's truly frozen, restart the app and reopen the project; the captions are often already there. Splitting long videos into shorter pieces (10 minutes or less on mobile) also helps.

6. The feature asks for Pro

CapCut's pages disagree on whether auto captions are free or a Pro tool, and some accounts see a limited allowance. If you see a Pro badge or usage counter on Generate, that's the reason. Pro lists at USD 19.99/month, varying by region.

7. Outdated app

Old versions had caption bugs. Update CapCut from the App Store, Google Play, or Help → Check for updates on desktop.

8. Captions are generated but mostly wrong

Mute background music and sound effects, make sure only the voice is audible, delete the captions and regenerate. Then fix remaining words in Edit captions. More tips in how to fix wrong words in auto captions.

Quick checklist

Check Fix
Is there clear speech? Raise voice volume, lower music
Is the language right? Change it, regenerate
Stable internet? Use Wi-Fi
Audio unmuted? Unmute the clip
App up to date? Update CapCut
Pro prompt shown? Upgrade or use another tool

When you just need the captions done

If the video is already edited and CapCut won't cooperate, a dedicated caption tool can be quicker. Capsubs runs in the browser: upload the finished video, choose a style and color, check the words, and download it with word-by-word captions burned in. Free accounts get 1 video every 2 weeks with no watermark. See Capsubs vs CapCut.

FAQ

Why are my CapCut captions out of sync? Usually because the clip was edited after captioning. Regenerate captions after your final cut.

Does CapCut work offline for captions? CapCut's help says mobile uses cloud recognition, so you need a connection.

Can I import captions instead? On desktop and web you can import an SRT file; the mobile app doesn't support direct SRT import.
