In 2026, TikTok allows up to 10 minutes recorded in the app and up to 60 minutes uploaded; YouTube Shorts can be up to 3 minutes; and Instagram Reels can be up to 3 minutes recorded in the app, with uploads of up to 20 minutes rolling out, though Reels over 3 minutes aren't shown to new audiences. Most of the best-performing short-form still lands well under two minutes.

What length performs best?

There's no single answer, and the data points in different directions:

  • TikTok published in 2021 that 21–34 seconds was its sweet spot, but by 2024 it said viewers were spending half their time on videos over a minute, and it has been pushing longer content since.
  • Reels: one analysis of 2,000 creator videos (Statusphere, 2024) found 60–80 second Reels earned the most views, with Reels under 20 seconds second.
  • Shorts: analyses of large datasets point to very short (around 13 seconds) or full one-minute Shorts doing best, with the middle underperforming.

A practical rule: make it as long as the content holds attention, and no longer. Hook in the first two seconds, cut pauses, and end when the point lands.

Captions and length

Longer videos need captions more, not less: viewers who started on mute will drop off if they can't follow. Capsubs captions videos up to 3 minutes on Free and 6 minutes on Basic and Pro, which covers every Short and Reel that can reach new viewers and nearly every TikTok people post.

FAQ

Can a YouTube Short be longer than 60 seconds? Yes, up to 3 minutes for square or vertical videos uploaded since October 15, 2024. Shorts over a minute with an active Content ID claim are blocked.

Why does my TikTok stop at a certain length? If you added a licensed sound, TikTok can limit the video to that sound's length.

Should I post long videos as Reels? Reels over 3 minutes still post, but Instagram only shows them to existing followers, not in recommendations.
