TikTok Auto Captions Not Showing? How to Fix It
Why TikTok captions don't appear for creators or viewers, how to fix each cause, and how to make sure captions always show by burning them in.
By the Capsubs team · Updated · 2 min read

TikTok auto captions usually don't show because the video has no clear speech (music or singing isn't transcribed), the video language is set wrong, the app is out of date, the viewer has hidden captions, or captions are still processing after posting. Fix the language under More options → Select video language, update the app, and make sure the speech is audible over any music.
If you're the creator
The Captions button does nothing
- No speech: TikTok captions speech, not songs added to the video. Make sure someone is talking clearly.
- First use: the first time, TikTok asks you to turn captions on; accept the prompt.
- Old app: update TikTok.
Captions don't appear after posting
- Processing time: auto-generated captions can take a while on longer videos.
- Wrong language: before posting, tap More options → Select video language and choose the spoken language. Eligible videos get captions in that language.
- Unsupported language: auto captions cover a set of languages, not all of them.
Captions are wrong
Tap the caption on your video, then Edit captions, fix the lines and tap Save. Before posting, use the pencil icon on the Captions screen.
If you're the viewer
- Hidden by mistake: if you tapped a caption and chose Hide captions, tap the small caption indicator at the side of the video to show them again.
- Accessibility setting: check captions are turned on in TikTok's settings under accessibility.
- The creator didn't enable them: not every video has captions.
Make sure captions always show
TikTok's captions can be hidden by viewers and sometimes don't generate at all. Captions burned into the video always show, in the muted feed, with your own style. With Capsubs, upload your video, pick a style (Highlight puts the spoken word in color), and post the captioned file. Turn off TikTok's captions for that video so the text doesn't double up.
Quick fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No Captions button | Old app | Update TikTok |
| Captions blank | Music or no clear speech | Make speech louder than music |
| Wrong words or language | Language not set | Select video language, then edit |
| Missing after posting | Still processing | Wait, then check again |
| Viewer can't see them | Hidden by viewer | Tap the caption indicator to show |
FAQ
Why can't I edit TikTok captions? Burned-in text can't be edited after posting; auto-generated captions can, from the video.
Do TikTok captions work for songs? No, TikTok's captions are for speech. For lyrics, add text manually or use a tool with a lyrics mode.
