The best caption apps for iPhone in 2026 are Captions (AI-heavy, made for talking-head creators), CapCut (full editor), YouTube Create (free, clips up to 60 seconds), and the built-in tools in TikTok, Instagram and YouTube; if you don't want another app, a browser tool like Capsubs works in Safari. Apple's own Clips app, which made automatic "Live Titles", stopped being available to new users in October 2025, and iMovie has no auto captions.

We make Capsubs. Details for other apps are from their own pages as of October 20, 2026.

Captions

Teleprompter, eye-contact correction, AI edits and avatars alongside caption templates. Excellent if you record yourself talking and want the app to polish it. The free plan includes one caption template; most AI features use credits on paid plans.

CapCut

A full editor with auto captions under Captions → Auto captions. Best if you cut, add music and effects in the same app. Whether captions are free depends on your account; look for a Pro badge on Generate.

YouTube Create

Google's free editor (iPhone XR or newer, iOS 17+). Tap Captions, choose the language and Generate; edit words and style. It can't caption clips longer than 60 seconds, and it isn't available in every country.

The platforms' own tools

Free and quick; the catch is that captions are made inside each app, so they don't come with the file if you post elsewhere. Guides: TikTok, Reels, Shorts.

Capsubs (no app)

Open capsubs.com in Safari, pick a clip from Photos, choose a style, color and position, and download an MP4 with word-by-word captions burned in. Nothing to install, no watermark, and the same file goes to every platform. It's captions only: no trimming, music or effects. Steps in how to add captions on iPhone.

How to choose

  • Record and edit everything on your phone → CapCut
  • Want AI to fix eye contact and edit for you → Captions
  • Short clips going to YouTube, free → YouTube Create
  • Already-edited videos, captions only, every platform → Capsubs

FAQ

Is there a free iPhone app for animated captions? CapCut (depending on your account), Captions (one template on free) and YouTube Create all have free options. Capsubs is free for 1 video every 2 weeks in Safari.

Do I need an app at all? No. Web tools run in Safari and save the result to Photos.

What happened to Apple Clips? Apple stopped updating it and removed it for new downloads on October 10, 2025; existing users can keep using it on iOS 26 or earlier.
