How Accurate Are Auto Captions? (And How to Get Fewer Errors)

Auto captions get most clear English right, but accuracy drops with music, accents and crosstalk. Real measured numbers and practical fixes.

On clear, single-speaker English, modern auto captions get roughly 9 out of 10 words right or better, but accuracy falls with background music, overlapping voices, strong accents and less common languages. The fastest way to better captions is cleaner audio plus a quick check of names, numbers and slang before you post.

What the measurements say

Accuracy is usually reported as word error rate (WER): the share of words that are wrong, missing or added. Lower is better. A few published figures for OpenAI's Whisper models, which many caption tools use:

Condition Result Source
Read English speech (Whisper large-v3) About 9% WER Lesskeys, 29-language test
Read Spanish / Italian / German About 3–5% WER Same test
Hebrew, Hindi 30–48% WER Same test
Single speaker in a panel recording About 93% accurate Videotext, difficult-audio test
Overlapping speakers (cross-talk) About 82% accurate Same test
Strong non-native English accents About 88–94% accurate Same test

Benchmarks use read or recorded test speech, so your real results depend on your audio. OpenAI's own model card warns that accuracy varies by language, accent and demographic group, and that the model can sometimes produce words that weren't said.

The usual causes of errors

  1. Music under speech. The single most common problem on social video.
  2. Names and brands. Rare words get replaced with common ones.
  3. Overlapping voices. The model follows the louder speaker.
  4. Silence and noise. Some models invent text over silent or noisy stretches. Capsubs runs a voice-activity check that drops words detected where nobody is speaking.
  5. Language switching mid-sentence.

How to get fewer errors

  • Use a microphone close to your mouth, even a cheap clip-on.
  • Record in a quiet room; soft furnishings reduce echo.
  • Add music after captioning, or keep it low under speech.
  • Speak names clearly the first time you say them.
  • Pick the right language in tools that ask.
  • Always check before posting, especially names, numbers and negatives ("can"/"can't"). Capsubs has a Check words before burning in step; TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and CapCut let you edit too. See how to fix wrong words.

Does paying get better accuracy?

Not much. Most free and paid tools use similar speech models, and audio quality matters far more than the plan. What paid plans add is usually volume, styling and no watermark (free vs paid). Human transcription services such as Rev are the option when you need near-perfect accuracy, at a much higher price per minute.

FAQ

Which auto captions are most accurate? It varies by audio and language, and vendor accuracy claims (often "99%") rarely say how they were measured. Test two tools on your own video.

Why do captions show words nobody said? That's "hallucination", most common in silence or music. Trim silent stretches or use a tool that filters non-speech.

Are YouTube's automatic captions accurate? They're often good on clear speech; YouTube itself advises reviewing them and fixing mistakes in YouTube Studio.
